Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
I'm a 21 years old student who living in Hochiminh city -Vietnam now .
I'm studying graphic design but my interested is digital painting and i'm trying both. I'm also like to do some thing in 3d but may be later ^^.

2) What first got you started in creating?
My very first things i draw is Pokemon , may be when i in high school.
i draw many of them in the card , make they can stand and play like an chess game , hand -made rpg game (that i'm a game master ^^).
Many of my neighborhood friends is my player, and let them fight each other.
I'm very surprised when i found out later, in Gameboy advance and other game have the same kind of things i done - but a real game. I didn't know about that when i did it.
That is my first things ^^

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
The biggest inspiration in Art is fantasy things.
I also have feeling in romantic and history, but the biggest thing is fantasy, dream, scifi - something unreal and let the imagination fly away.
I will become the graphic design in jun 2009, then in my pictures I always want to put in there somethings. The meaning, deep meaning. I want to tell about the environment, about the society, how people live, how they treated to each other. War and sadness.

Follow the line like that then my pictures alway have a dark and heavy feeling.
I should make my mine brighter soon or i will become the dark -crazy-artist someday^^ (or already?)

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
I made this work for moondaughterstory.
It is actually my first commission also.

In the scene after the battle of the character who always alone, powerful but lonely, stand in the battle field where silent, just cold and the snow flying.
That is my style.

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
Hm, i make the sketch about the face, the armor, the sword, her crown, her clothes first.
After it look good enough (by my thinking that time^^) i make the scene in sketch, the line art and color it.
The picture still with : the sketch > the line art sketch > line art > coloring.

I don't use the reference or anythings else. I think i should but i just want to draw the things i had in mi mine.
Maybe the reference is everything i had saw before. Then i didn't really used something.

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
I've somes kind of : found and save everything beautiful and useful. I learnt a lot from deviantART (of course), in cgtalk, in cghub, in minitokyo, zidean ...
I don't know who or which is better, many and all good.
The best way is find out by your self, judge if it suit for your self and try it.

If you find the brush please go here : leventep -- He is my ...idol ^^

"If you want to draw in the computer better then you should train drawing by hand."
If you can draw by pencil, water color, oil painting... Then you can use it in the computer easily.

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
I believe that they all out side there, somewhere near you, some where you can't see, the fairytale still run with or with out our notice. We just can see when we think it is real.

8) Anything else you would like to add?
At last, thank a thousand times for the monthly adward, i will try more and more to the fantasy word ahead.
That is all i want to say.

Thanx so much for answering us, and congrats for creating such a beautiful piece!

Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
My name is Laura, i am 22 years old and i live in Romania, in a creepy little village.

2) What first got you started in creating?
I've been drawing since I can remember, it's an inherited skill, but i never intended before to focus on art. I went to some art schools, but it was a disappointing experience, so for a long time i almost quit. I got my interest back last year, when i bought a tablet and also started to attempt realism or fantasy themes. My favorite styles are surreal expressionism or abstract art and at first i only tried to draw fantasy for fun; but it proved to be harder than i thought and it became a sort of challenge.

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
Mainly music, but there are a lot of sources. Old religions, magic, dreams, history..

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
At first, i was just making a study after a photo. After i painted roughly the face features, her expression made me think of this scene. This happens often, an element leads to something new. This painting is particularly inspired by the history of Tatar people [link] , although it's a fantasy piece.

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
It started as a speedpainting, to set the main elements. Then i searched various pictures of horses, pictures of traditional Tatar dresses (her outfit is inspired by a photo of some dancers), also the typical bow and horse gear. From there, i just had to imagine how the shadows and lights would look like and add detail. I tried to keep each element on a different layer, but it soon became messy, so i left only two layers, one for the background and one for the character and horse.

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
I don't know if this passes as a tip, but i can tell what I do. I watch a lot of images and keep the most interesting, trying to understand the way they were created. I've also got to the conclusion that making studies after real life persons and objects (classic statues are useful because they have idealized proportions), or after photos, is way more useful than following the steps in a tutorial. But this might be different for others, because each person has another approach. Anyway, practice is the most important thing.

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
Hmm..that's a tricky question. My general beliefs are pretty abstract. Shortly, i won't believe anything that breaks a law of physics, but i believe in 'cheat codes' for reality. It's too much to explain here..

8) Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, i want to thank the wonderful community of EnchantedForest and everybody on dA who supported me or was kind enough to share an advice. This keeps me motivated and i hope i can do the same for others
P.S. excuse my english!

Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
My name is Alex and I’m a 22 year old Art student. I’m a rather optimistic person (except some bad days) and I love to sleep and drink coffee :3

2) What first got you started in creating?
I have been creating since the first time I took a pencil so I think it was a rather natural start. But the thing that inspired me the most when I was a bit older were Japanese cartoons on TV. They weren't too popular and were quite old but still -  mindblowing. It was the first time I have seen anything like this. From that day I wanted to make cartoons too :D

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
I think it's quite hard to say. Inspiration usually just strikes me, I have ideas all the time. But while those Bad Days I enjoy and find it useful to see some movies about artists like 'Modigliani' or 'What Dreams May Come'. Books are also needed then. New books. I can aslo check the images in 'My Inspiration' collection, here on DA. There are my favourite pieces which amaze my with their authors' technical skills or the incredible creativity and originality they show.

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
Actually, you! :D You've made this poll with a faerie name generator and I've found my faerie there. turboartz suggested to make a piece with it and I thought it's not such a bad idea.

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
HO! You can see it here. I've explained everyting in this step-by-step presentation ^^ I've only forgot to mention doing a very first design sketch of my faerie but it is shown here.

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
Never give up!
And always have a piece of paper and a pencil somewhere near you to sketch any new ideas that can come into your mind ^^ There are never too many ideas to choose from

And as it comes to tuts, here are the ones which were my very first teachers while creating digital art:
By Yumedust
By Rozefire
By yanimator

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
I really, really do believe! I think that we can see them all the time helping us, playing tricks or just watching us living but as long as we keep on denying we can see them, we'll stay 'blind'.

8) Anything else you would like to add?
Open your eyes (:

Spring Garden by tommytanart by :icontommytanart:

Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
My name is Tommy and I am an art student from CA, USA. I'm currently studying illustration and studio art and would hope to somehow get the chance to work for a big gaming/movie industry. I'm more of a traditionally-trained artist but since i recently dipped into digital art early this year, i have to say that it has been an awesome experience.

2) What first got you started in creating?
My dad was an artist and I used to look up to him when i was young, so i decided to take up drawing as a hobby to be like him. After that, i just found myself more and more involved in the art world.

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
My biggest art inspiration has got to be music. There's always a story in my head whenever i listen to a certain song or melody (which i do a lot). The story then becomes a fixed image and I would then display that image on paper or on photoshop.

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
Spring Garden was inspired by other artworks (from heise, qianyu to name a couple...) that I've been observing on DA, and from the score from House of Flying Daggers.

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
The first step was to put the image from my head to a sketch on photoshop. I then had to decide the positioning of the character and the lighting and coloration that would apply. I looked around for stock images that would assist me with this (mainly for lighting purposes). I then just placed on my artist hat and let everything unreaveal.

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
Well, my only tip is that when you're drawing, you have to have a lot of patience and persistence. To make a good image, you have to put in a lot of time for researching either for stock (which by the way is a very helpful source if you are aiming towards realism in your artwork), or for color and lighting studies.
I recently found some useful tutorials for lighting and coloring here: toerning.deviantart.com/art/A-…
Thank you toerning for that! =)
Also a helpful skin tutorial: acidlullaby.deviantart.com/art… from acidlullaby

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
It's the core of imagination. Art wouldn't be the same without it. =)

8) Anything else you would like to add?
I'm still very surprised and glad I got this privilege to share my art with everyone in the club. I would like to thank the admins for nominating Spring Garden and for everyone's votes and support. A HUGE thank you goes out to you guys! ;) :w00t:

Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
My name is Bente and I am a concept artist and fantasy illustrator from Hamburg/Germany. I work for art magazines and book publishers, however I'm also studying Ilusration and Design. I'm a traditional taught artist, however I found my love with digital painting three years ago.
I love to paint fantasy based themes.gelehrt
Well...I think that are the most important informtions about me ;)

2) What first got you started in creating?
I always loved to paint since I was a little child. I didn't need any motivation, I just started to paint. My parents often told me that I was one of those children who could occupy themselves alone for hours.

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
Music and Poems. Sometimes it happens that I'm listening to a song or I read a poem and suddenly a picture appears in my head that wants to be painted. I very much like poems from Tolkien, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare and Joseph von Eichendorff.
If I want to be in a certain mood to be able to "feel" the painting I'm creating I just listen to music which I think is necessary for me to reach this mood.
But I also like to simply look at paintings from old masters like Bougereau, Holbein or Waterhouse. Generally I love the Pre-Raphaelites and writers, artists and designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
I also like John Howe, Alan Lee and of course Brian Froud (I love his art books, they are so inspiring!).

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
I don't know exactly, but I definitively thought of the Ophelia theme when painting it (the overall mood, the pale almost transparent skin).
I wanted to create a dark and mystic place, hidden from the sun and the human eye. She's a water spirit, close to a mix of a Rusalka and a Banshee. She might seem harmless but you'd better not cross her path.

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
My painting are always outcoming of some of my sketchbooks, so the paintings are always based on sketches which I combine with live light sketches (sometimes including a model), because you can't achieve such realism without a good reference. I look for reference material concerning color mood and such (which means, if I like the lighting ot color mode of a certain picture I find, I try to bring it in one of my painting. The theme of the reference therfore can be completely different to my final painting).
After that I can start to paint.

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
As I mentioned in the previous answer, I often look for pictures which overall mood I like. I have a huge collection of such inspiring images and as long as I only copy the color sheme I can't infringe somebody's right.
I would recommend that to everyone.
It's also good to look at old masters, as they knew how to work with light and color, because not every tutorial you find online is helpful and effective.
The art magazine ImagineFX offers some good tutorials, also for beginners (www.imaginefx.com) -Another good magazine with lots of tutorials and always a free lite version is the 2DArtist Magazine (www.2dartistmag.com)
On my website (www.creativesoul.de) I also have some small tutorial or walkthroughs of some of my paintings. Perhaps you find something useful there cause I'm always adding something new.
- but generally I would recommend "learning by doing" or better "trying" and never give up because when I started with painting I never thought I could paint as realistic as I do today. And when I look back I see frustration and disbelief maybe anger, but I also see practise, ambition and passion for what I loved.
And that is art.

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
Magic is everywhere, just close your eyes and dream.

8) Anything else you would like to add?
Um...I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. It was unexpected but it made me smile!
I also want to thank everyone who supports me, watches me or gives some nice comments. Even if I can't answer back to all comments,be sure I still read them and appreciate them!

Ice Queen by elanordh by :iconelanordh:

Artist Interview

1) A little introduction? Who are you?
My name is Monika and I'm 30 years old. I live in Poland, in a quite lovely town called Poznań. I must say that I'm mostly a listener, not speaker, so when I saw the results of the poll the morning before the winner was announced, I started to be really afraid, that my work might win and that I would have to talk about me... *laughs* And I really cheered for all the other nominated works, because they were stunning. :) I'm still a bit shocked... and embarrassed. But at the same time very happy. :)

2) What first got you started in creating?
I started creating  thanks to admiring some awesome arts. I wanted to be able to create something as beautiful as the pieces I saw. So about 7 years ago I bought my first graphic program and the journey had begun. ;) Recently I started using Photoshop, so I'm still learning. :)

3) What is your biggest inspiration when it comes to Art?
It's fantasy, my imagination and music – the images it creates in my head, the feelings it evokes.

When it comes to various technics, I love to experiment (I still think it's the best way to learn), but looking at other artists works, I mean, their technics, reading tutorials to learn new technics can be also very helpful.

4) What about the piece we featured? What inspired you to create it?
Certainly, without any doubt, it was an amazing photo taken by Labecula. When I saw it, I simply fell in love with it. I asked her if I could use it and she agreed. The second inspiration was the song „Ice Queen” by Within Temptation. When I was creating my work, I could hear the song in my head almost all the time. :) Especially the fragment „Whenever she is raging, she takes all life away”. :)

5) What processes do you take when preparing and making this piece?
First I found the picture. Then, for a few days I was „walking around”, and thinking about the whole concept of my work, so my imagination could work on it for awhile. And only when I had the first ideas, I started gathering other stocks that I would need. But I have to say, that the work was creating itself during all creating process. ;) My Muse can be unpredictable sometimes. ;)

6) Do you have any tips or advice for our members? Good links to tuts maybe?
I guess first of all will be, to follow your imagination and to not force anything. For example if you create something and suddenly you feel that a part of your work, doesn't fit somehow, change it.
Good tutorials? Since recently I've started learning digital painting (this work also has some painted elements), I started reading the tutorials.(I wasn't using tutorials before – apart from 100x100 icon tutorials) And here are some of digital painting tutorials I love :
- Digital Painting Tutorial by Dianae.
- Hair Tutorial by jezebel.

7) Now about Enchanted Forest and the Faeries & Little Folk : What are your beliefs?
I believe that my naughty, stubborn Muse is an Elf. She adores music! ;) She can be really obsessed. ;)

8) Anything else you would like to add?
I'd like to thank everyone here for all the support. I'm really grateful. I'd like to thank Labecula for allowing me to use her amazing photograph. And lastly I want to give you one, tiny advice. If you want to make your own Muses happy, just follow your imagination.
Thank you! :)
